Counselling
OVERVIEW
Counselling is an organic, free-flowing process. There’s no agenda, l work with what you bring each week. I’ll be listening in a different kind of way to an ordinary conversation: helping you become aware of what’s outside your conscious awareness, to make connections between apparently unrelated aspects of your experience, and to put you in touch with what’s hidden in your emotional landscape.
Whilst creative methods and homework might support our sessions, counselling is as much about being as it is doing. When we interrupt the autopilot on which we live our lives, make some space around us and really look and see what’s there, we can respond to life from a place of awareness and make better choices for ourselves.
is it right for me?
Counselling can be short-term or open ended and what we work on and how will depend on how much time we have. Discrete events in the here and now - eg. relationship issues, losing one’s job, a health setback - might be worked with over the course of 3-6 months. Issues with a longer history, including loss, abuse, and trauma usually need more time.
If you’re somebody who grew up in a atmosphere where love was conditional on achievement, thinking was deemed more valuable than feeling and stability and predictability won out over spontaneity and play, then this style of therapy could be challenging for you but also how you grow.
What’s the next step?
If my approach resonates with you, why not schedule a free 20-minute telephone conversation so we can discuss your needs? If it feels right, we can schedule a 60-minute assessment session where I’ll take a history and get a better sense of you and your life as a whole so we can figure out the best way to work together. Then we can schedule a regular time to meet, usually once a week for 50 minutes for as long as is beneficial for you.
